Are You Smarter Than a High Schooler?

8

JANUARY, 2019

If you were like me, then you thought you knew everything when you were in high school. How the world should be run. An expert on whatever latest thing you learned about in school, and so on. However, did you know that much about energy? Let’s be honest, you probably didn’t think much about energy at all until you started to have to pay your own utility bill, then it suddenly becomes an important topic.

A screenshot of the National Energy Foundation game where you can test your energy knowledge.

This lack of interest in energy is a common phenomenon, and today’s high school students are still in the dark when it comes to energy issues. A 2017 national survey of over two thousand high schoolers across the US proved that we have a long way to go in educating our youth on energy issues and increasing energy literacy. The results of a survey by the National Energy Foundation showed that out of a possible 100 total points, the average high schooler surveyed scored 48.8. That score would earn you an F in the classroom. However, there is a bright spot within the survey results, and it centers around technology. Our youth are living in a digital age, and we are more dependent on energy than ever before. Smartphones have given kids the ability to have information at their fingertips, and niche information can be provided to them at age-appropriate levels.

One such example of niche marketing to youth and their mobile devices is a game version of an educational program about energy where you can test your knowledge, and see if you are smarter than a high schooler. You can play the game here http://thinkenergy.org/ee-poster/index.html.

I challenge you to beat my high score . . . and FYI, not to brag, but I was smarter than a high schooler!
