As I was reviewing the latest figures from the US Energy Information Association (EIA) about which states consume and spend the most on electricity per capita, I did what everyone does when they look at a list … they scan for their name or state. I started at the top and looked down, and on both lists there was Missouri, smack dab in the middle.
I started humming the song “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel.
“Clowns to the left of me,
jokers to the right,
here I am, stuck in the middle with you.”
Then I started to think how awesome it is to be in the middle. Most people’s favorite part of an OREO is the middle. How could you not love Jan Brady on the Brady Bunch, the middle child?
#1: Louisiana #25: Missouri #51: New York (District of Columbia was included in the ranking)
#1: North Dakota #27: Missouri #51: Florida
Missouri is in the middle when it comes to how much energy we consume per capita, and how much we spend per capita on energy. When you look at the average retail prices for natural gas, unfortunately Missouri is the 9th most expensive state, but when you look the rankings of states based on price of electricity, Missouri is ranked 42. Balance those out, Missouri is in the middle.
“Yes, I’m stuck in the middle with you,
And I’m wondering what it is I should do
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face…”
