Nickelodeon Discovers Key to Renewable Energy

If you grew up in the 1980’s, you know that the Nickelodeon TV station has had many game shows for kids, and the standard theme among them all is Green Slime. It started out on “You Can’t-Do That on Television,” and it was a massive hit among the young audience.

Well, that green slime may just be the key to unlocking a renewable energy source and reducing our dependence on oil.

How will green slime help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil?

The Science Answer: The biomass to fuel conversion is a biochemical path that involves the degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose which are the structural components of plants, into simple sugars through pretreatment and the use of enzymes. Microorganisms then ferment the sugars to ethanol and other alcohols. Answer: This cool green slime (enzymes) eats corn stalks left after harvesting corn and makes fuel that we can use to drive our car.

Why is this important? The discovering of this cocktail of green slime brings down the cost of creating biofuel to $2.15 per gallon. I filled up my car today at $2.43 per gallon. We can now generate biofuels from plant waste cheaper than refining oil into gasoline.

Hat tip to the smart people at the National Renewable Energy Lab. I now “Double Dare” you to get it below $2 a gallon.
